A husband and father of six children went into hospital for a kidney stone and came out as a woman – and she doesn’t mind one bit.
Steve Crecelius says he felt ‘validated’ when a nurse reading his ultrasound said, “Huh, this says you’re a female”.
Steve attended a Denver, Colorado hospital due to a kidney stone, but the ultrasound revealed he was ‘intersex’, meaning he has external male genitalia, but female internal organs.
For Steve, it was the culmination of 40 years of hiding his true self.
“I remember wearing my mom’s clothes and makeup, very secretly, not telling anybody,” Steve, who chose to live as a man, told a local news station.
But now he finally had a medical explanation for his conflicting feelings.
Far from being scared off, Steve’s wife Debbie forced him to talk about what he had learned, and quickly accepted her husband’s condition.
Admitting it wasn’t easy at first, Debbie says she came to embrace her husband’s decision to begin living life as a woman – even taking him shopping for his first bra.
“I didn’t sign on for this, but who signs on for anything?’, Debbie said, ‘She’s the same person she was as a he on the inside.”
Debbie says she still loves Steve, now living as Stevie, as much as she ever has in their 25 years together.
“She still relates to my heart and soul, and I still relate to hers, and I think that that’s the essence of true love.”
Steve admits his journey from living as a man to becoming a woman hasn’t been easy, but has been helped with the love and support of his wife and children.
Initially, Stevie was worried about breaking the news to her children, but they all came around quickly.
“Within a few minutes, all of them said, “I don’t care dad; I love you for who you are”.
Support: Stevie's wife Debbie, right, stood by her after the discovery and they are still together
