Lady Gaga was forced to re-shoot her response to a question about Julia Gillard’s stance on gay marriage because the pop diva gave her first answer believing the prime minister was a lesbian.
Gaga made the mistake during an interview with A Current Affair’s Tracy Grimshaw last night.
The singer was asked if she thought Gillard was a hypocrite for living with her “partner” while being an advocate for ‘traditional’ marriage, but not gay marriage.
Thinking Gillard’s ‘partner’ was a woman, Gaga responded passionately, called her a hypocrite.
But by the end of the interview she realised her mistake and whispered it to Grimshaw who laughed and asked if she would tell the audience.
The embarrassed singer refused and Grimshaw ended up explaining why the question was being repeated, prompting laughter from the crowd.
Gaga said she misunderstood because of the way the question was asked, explaining that in the US the word partner is generally used by a gay person to describe their lover.
It’s understood Gaga wanted the chance to answer again so she could take a less aggressive swipe at the PM.
After the interview the pop diva hit the city, following up on a hint she made to her more than 11 million Twitter followers about an unplanned appearance at Darlinghurst gay clubs Nevermind and Arq.
“Thinking of going out in Sydney Tonight. How I wish we had a show. NEVERMIND, don’t listen to me. Maybe i’ll just go for a walk in the pARQ,” the singer Tweeted around 2pm.
Not long after fans began arriving to wait near the entrances of the two clubs near Taylor Square.
Gaga finally arrived, her face shrouded in a lace veil, at 11pm and waved to fans before entering Nevermind, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Nevermind owner Stephen Lowe said Gaga was expected to perform two or three songs.
“Madonna wouldn’t do it, she wouldn’t bother. I love that Gaga is thinking about her fans,” he was quoted as saying.
She stayed at the club for around an hour before moving on to Arq.
Gaga also performed a medley of hit tracks on the show, which wowed the intimate audience of just 68 fans.(Watch more: Gaga wows in perspex box)
Trent Norton dressed in a skeleton face in a nod to Gaga’s video for ‘Born This Way’, and was rewarded with a hugs from his idol.
“I was desperate to see her at the Monster Hall show but couldn’t get a ticket,” Mr Norton said. “I can’t believe I’ve hugged her and spoken to her. She is just amazing.” (Read more: It’s surreal in Lady Gaga’s shoes)
